For centuries, the internationally renown Palio, frantic horse race has taken place in The Piazza del Campo. The preparations of this famous tradition are marked throughout the year, the race takes place on the 2nd of July, and further, on the 16th August, when 10 of the 17 Contrade, with all their followers and supporters, give all to aim the crown. The San Martino Inn is situated in the heart of the Contrada della Torre, just 200 metres from Piazza del Campo.
